Macroinvertebrate habitat requirements in rivers: overestimation of environmental flow calculations in incised rivers

چکیده

Abstract. Flow variability determines the conditions of river ecosystems and ecological functioning. The processes in gradually decreases due to channelization incision. Prediction environmental flow allows us keep biological diversity health developed as a response degradation aquatic overexploited by humans. goal study was test influence incision on estimation based Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) macroinvertebrate index. A total 240 assemblages 12 waterbodies differing bed substrate amplitude discharge were surveyed southern Poland. Variations distribution 151 466 macroinvertebrates belonging 92 families analysed. similarity benthic reflects typological division rivers into three classes: Tatra mountain streams, flysch rivers, upland carbonate silicate rivers. As variable reflecting river, BMWP_PL index chosen. significantly increased values e-flow calculations relation redeposited channels. area optimal habitat for decreased with intensity. In highly incised are close mean annual flow, suggesting that high volume water is needed obtain good conditions. consequence, downcutting impoverishment habitats will proceed.

Determining environmental flow requirements for substrate maintenance in cobble and boulder bed rivers in South Africa

To ensure a healthy and biodiverse ecosystem in cobble and boulder bed rivers, it is imperative that the channel bed is maintained. In pristine catchments this is achieved by the range of flows characteristic of the natural flow regime, which typically incorporates “maintenance” flood flows of different timing, duration and frequency. The construction of dams however, leads to a change in the f...

Environmental qualitative assessment of rivers sediments

In this study, the concentrations of heavy metals (Ca, Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni) in thesediment of Shavoor River in Khuzestan Province in Iran has been investigated. After the library studies and field studies, six samples of water and sediment were taken from the river in order to evaluate heavy metal pollution in sediments. To determine the geochemical phases of metals in sediment samples the 5-ste...

Comparison of the environmental flow assessment methods involving case studies of Karaj and Talar Rivers

Environmental flow is explained as the period of time, quantity and the amount of required water for maintaining the water, fresh, the river’s ecosystem, human beings’ welfare and the life depending on the water. The main goal of this paper is to investigate and compare the hydrological methods including Tennant, aquatic flow, Tessman, analysis of the flow duration curve and the flow duration c...
